for me at kick boxing.”

~ Emo Philips

Not much goes on in the world that isn’t controlled by computers. For such a recent invention they have quickly made themselves indispensable to us. From the first abacus to the latest laptop, computers are everywhere and everyone needs to know how they work.

The term “computer” was first used in 1613 by Richard Braithwait, an English academic in his book The Young Man’s Gleanings.”

In this context, a computer was a person who calculated things in their head.

It wasn’t until 1801 and Joseph Marie Jacquard’s textile looms that first programmable computer came about. The program consisted of punched cards that the loom could read and interpret into designs.

Then, in 1837, Richard Babbage devised the first programmable computer called the “Analytical Engine.” It wasn’t a success and now sits in the Science Museum in London. His son, Henry Babbage went on to create further computers that could lead to the first use of computing tables.

It is these that are credited with being the foundations of modern software.
