The subcontinent of South America forms part of the Americas and it at the southernmost tip of the continent. It measures 6.8 million square miles, includes 12 countries, 3 dependencies and is home to over 390 million people.

South America is regarded as everything west of the Pacific Ocean and south and east of the Atlantic. It includes countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

Evidence shows the area was occupied from around 9000 BC, but it was probably much earlier than that.

Agriculture came early to the area, with chili peppers, squashes and beans grown to feed an ever-growing populace.

The civilization of Norte Chico was one of the first to rise in South America. They were followed by the Moche, Paracas, Nazca, Inca and the Mapuche. Portugal and Spain settled much of the subcontinent in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, which is why the Spanish and Portuguese languages dominate.
